The Neon Collection series originated from spontaneous sketches made during on-site observations of my surroundings. .
The Floral Series is rooted in the traditional Chinese painting techniques of flower-and-bird compositions while incorporating personal emotions. Amidst the noise of daily life, even flowers and grass reveal their charm—an invitation to slow down and appreciate life’s subtleties. Traditional Chinese painting follows a structured system, making the imagery appear somewhat detached from reality. However, this is the essence of Eastern art—it has evolved over centuries, moving beyond photographic accuracy in pursuit of an inner “truth.” The goal is not to depict a specific flower or leaf but to capture the essence of the plant as a whole.
Impressions of My Homeland: The artists says: Every brushstroke emerges from emotions that have settled after countless surges. The imagery is blurred, serene. My homeland is vast—so vast that I cannot recall every detail. Thus, I choose to gradually unveil my indistinct yet tranquil memories, free from the need to specify a particular landscape. As the poet Su Shi once wrote, "Where my heart finds peace, that is my home."
Yesterday in the Forest: Li Xiatong explains: In late summer of 2023, I wandered through Northern Xinjiang for a month. Even now, my thoughts linger among the dense spruce trees, riding with the horses, accompanied by the cries of cold ravens. Everything feels as if it happened just yesterday.
Fruit: A pine tree outside my window bore a large pinecone, which I had gazed upon for over a year, observing its many transformations. One day, I finally decided to paint it, capturing its presence and expressing my gratitude for its quiet companionship, day and night.
